There is no genetic difference between the Mini and Standard Dachshunds
One of the most common misconceptions about Dachshunds is that Miniature and Standard Dachshunds are genetically different. In reality, they are the same breed with no genetic separation. The only distinction between a Miniature and a Standard Dachshund is adult weight, not DNA, bloodline, or structure.
The Only Difference Is Size
According to breed standards, Dachshunds are categorized strictly by weight:
-
Miniature Dachshund: Under 11 pounds at maturity
-
Standard Dachshund: 12 pounds or more at maturity
That’s it. There is no separate gene, no different lineage, and no unique breed classification beyond size.
Same Genetics, Same Breed
Mini and Standard Dachshunds share:
-
The same genetic makeup
-
The same breed history
-
The same coat types (smooth, longhair, wirehair)
-
The same colors and patterns
-
The same temperament traits
Two Standard Dachshunds can produce a Miniature puppy, and two Miniature Dachshunds can produce a puppy that matures into a Standard. Size is influenced by natural genetic variation, not a separate genetic category.
Why the Confusion Exists
The confusion often comes from marketing terms or misunderstandings. Some people assume “mini” means a different breed or designer dog, but this is incorrect. The Dachshund is one breed, and size is simply a classification used for show standards and general description.
What Matters More Than Size
When choosing a Dachshund, factors like:
-
Health testing
-
Temperament
-
Responsible breeding practices
-
Proper care and socialization
are far more important than whether the dog matures under or over a specific weight.
We have parents here that will produce smaller puppies and some that will usually produce the standard size puppies. But here we concentrate on health and temperament. We have done DNA testing on all of our adults that included a 256-disease test. When you get a puppy from here, we want to hear how awesome and healthy your puppy is.
