Cold Weather Awareness

Divider

How cold is too cold for your pet. They say anything below 45 degrees F is too cold for long exposer. You should remain with your pet while outside to make sure they are brought back in timely. Puppies and older dogs are unable to regulate their body temperature and can get hypothermia quick. You should regularly check your pet’s paws because ice and snow can cause cracks or injuries. If your pet has lots of fur between it’s toes you do need to trim that so snow and ice don’t build up. You can dress you pet in clothing and they even have dog booties now. During the cold winter months, you can increase their protein and fats to keep them healthy and their coats shinny. I know everyone is aware not to leave their pets in a hot car but don’t leave your pet in the car during cold weather either. Be aware of signs of hypothermia, such as, shaking or uncontrolled shivering, ice on their body, whines, they stop moving or slow down. Seek medical attention at your vet’s office if ever in doubt.
