Socializing Your Pet

Divider

Everyone loves a friendly dog but how do puppies become friendly dogs. Socializing them at an early age is a must. A good breeder will expose the puppies to all kinds of sounds, sights, and smells while with their mother. The best time for a puppy to become social is from age 3 weeks to 18 weeks on average. Once home with their new family one should limit their interactions with people and other dogs until the puppy has all its immunizations. During this time socialize with only people you know that have their pets up to date on their vaccinations. By 16 weeks of age they should have had all their vaccinations and will then be able to meet and greet everyone. Your pet will sense how you feel about situations, so you should remain positive and calm. Always try to go places that will be a positive experience for the puppy. Start slow and increase the exposure over time. Going for car rides and exposure to different situations will build your puppies confidences. Even your own community looks different at night or when it’s raining or snowing. Try not to reward a fearful behavior by cuddling or trying to calm your puppy just slowly back out of the situation. You can look into signing your puppy up for a puppy socializing class.
