Summer Time Tips for your Dachshund

Divider

We all love summer months but here are some tips for keeping your dachshund safe. First and foremost, never leave your pet in the CAR! This should go without saying but, you would be surprised how many pets are left alone every summer in the heat of a car. Always be mindful of hot surfaces you pet will have to walk across. Your feet are protected with shoes, so you don’t realize how hot pavement and concrete get in the heat of the day.

Keep plenty of water out that they can drink or even swim in if they are water bugs. Dehydration is a serious condition that can occur when they don’t drink enough water. Have plenty of shade for them to get in and be aware of the shady spots in your yard at different times of the day.

Be aware of snakes that are in your area. Make sure that antifreeze is stored properly so that they could have access to drink because they say it taste sweet to them. A lot of dachshunds and other pets are afraid of fireworks. Keep them in the house at this time with the TV or radio on so that it will mask the sounds of the fireworks. They have calming chews at the vet’s office or pet stores that might help too.

What about applying sunscreen to your dachshund? You can’t have one that has zinc oxide or para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) in it due to toxicity. Zinc if ingested will cause red blood cells to burst which leads to anemia. Choose a sunscreen made for dogs if possible. When unable to find pet sunscreen use only sunscreen for babies or sensitive skin without PABA and Zinc. You can always use shirts, hats, bodysuits, and goggles to protect their eyes. The best way to protect them is to keep them inside from the hours of 10 am to 4 pm. Play time and walks should be done early mornings or late in evenings.
